Map of Italy showing outbreaks of malaria among the armed forces. 'The disease of malaria within the army: classification of military bases with respect to the disease of malaria', printed, c1940s. LSHTM Library & Archives
This Italian malaria map documents malaria prevalence at army bases across the country. Each dot marks a garrison, and the colours of the dots reflect malaria prevalence, the worst affected areas being shown in black. Malaria was prevalent in Italy until the early 1960s. The word 'malaria' means 'bad air' and relates to its association with swamps.
