Order of Service. Form of Thanksgiving for the cessation of the cholera outbreak in England in 1832 to be used at morning and evening church services, paper/printed ephemera, 1832. Museum of London
To the religious, the epidemic was seen as divine punishment for the sins of the nation. Special sermons were given to ask God for salvation or to thank Him for the cessation of an outbreak. These sermons were produced in printed form for wider circulation. Church leaders also advocated prayer and fasting as remedy, the same as those traditionally invoked for the plague.
